FAQ/Application
Where can I purchase Mylands Fine Finishing Products?
They are available at most woodworking specialty stores across the USA and online.
Mylands Danish Oil
Deeply penetrating protection with a natural satin finish — for interior and exterior wood.
Mylands Danish Oil is a carefully balanced blend of Tung Oil, other natural oils, synthetic resins, driers, and solvents, designed to offer a durable, easy-to-apply finish on a wide range of timbers.
This unique formula penetrates deep into the wood, enhancing the grain and color while providing lasting water resistance and a smooth, non-tacky satin sheen. Ideal for both interior and exterior use, Danish Oil gives a breathable, open-grain appearance while offering strong protection against moisture and wear.
๐ Interior Application
-
Apply Liberally
Using a brush or cloth, apply a generous coat of Danish Oil to clean, dry wood. -
Let It Penetrate
Allow the oil to soak into the timber for several minutes. -
Wipe Off Excess
Wipe away any surplus oil with a clean, lint-free cloth. -
Repeat for Build & Finish
Apply at least three coats, allowing each coat to dry fully before the next. For best results, lightly sand or buff between coats. -
Optional Final Finish
For a smoother feel, apply the final coat using fine-grade steel wool (0000) or a Scotchbrite pad, following the grain. Wipe clean after application.
๐ณ Exterior Application
-
First Coat
Apply a liberal first coat and allow it to dry without wiping off the excess. This allows maximum penetration and sealing. -
Build Up Protection
Apply additional coats as needed — exterior wood often requires more coats than interior applications, especially on oak or softwoods, which are prone to mold or water staining. -
Seal the End Grain
End grain may require up to six coats to seal thoroughly against moisture ingress. -
Weather Warning
Do not apply if rain is falling or forecast. Apply in dry conditions for best results.
โ Key Benefits:
-
Enhances natural grain and color
-
Penetrates deeply for long-lasting protection
-
Satin, non-sticky finish with water resistance
-
Suitable for both interior and exterior wood

Mylands Wax Polishes
How to Use Mylands Paste Wax on Furniture
Bring out the natural beauty of your wood with a smooth, professional finish.
What You’ll Need:
-
Mylands Paste Wax (choose your preferred sheen or color)
-
Clean lint-free cloth or fine-grade steel wool (#0000)
-
Soft buffing cloth (cotton or microfiber)
-
Optional: Fine sandpaper (400–600 grit)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare the Surface
Make sure the wood is clean, dry, and free of dust or grease. If refinishing, lightly sand the surface in the direction of the grain to remove any old finish or imperfections.
2. Apply the Wax
Using a lint-free cloth or steel wool, apply a small amount of Mylands Paste Wax in a thin, even layer. Work in manageable sections, rubbing the wax into the grain with light pressure.
3. Let It Dry
Allow the wax to dry for 10–20 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity. The surface will appear dull and hazy when ready for buffing.
4. Buff to a Shine
Use a soft clean cloth to buff the surface in circular motions until you achieve the desired sheen. Apply more pressure for a higher gloss.
5. Add Additional Coats (Optional)
For a deeper finish, apply 1–2 more thin coats, allowing each to dry and buffing thoroughly between applications.
Pro Tips:
-
Use clear wax to maintain the wood’s natural color, or try colored wax for subtle shading or patina.
-
For antique restoration, apply wax sparingly to preserve original character.
-
Wax can be reapplied periodically to maintain protection and luster.
Results:
โ Smooth, rich finish
โ Enhanced grain definition
โ Long-lasting protection with a natural look and feel

MYLANDS LACACOTE SANDING SEALER
Shellac-based performance with fast-drying clarity and superior sealing power.
This high-quality shellac-based sealer is expertly formulated to leverage the natural advantages of shellac — including exceptional clarity, adhesion, sealing, and rapid drying.
Lacacote Sanding Sealer is especially effective on oily woods such as rosewood or teak, where it locks in natural oils that would otherwise interfere with the drying and adhesion of subsequent finishes.
It's also ideal for refinished pieces, sealing in residual oils, waxes, and silicones left behind by polishes or strippers — helping to ensure a clean, stable surface for your topcoats.
Widely trusted by woodturners, refinishers, and furniture restorers, Lacacote provides the perfect foundation for finishing work. It’s particularly effective when used before wax application, ensuring a smooth, even sheen and better durability.
Key Benefits:
โ Fast-drying for efficient workflow
โ Excellent clarity to showcase grain and color
โ Seals in oils and residues that interfere with finishing
โ Ideal prep layer before wax or topcoat
โ Great for turning projects and refinished wood surfaces
Pro Tip:
Apply thin coats with a brush or cloth. Sand lightly between coats with fine-grit abrasive for a smooth, professional surface.
MYLANDS HIGH BUILD FRICTION POLISH
Create a deep, glossy finish with ease — perfect for woodturning projects.
This shellac-based polish delivers an exceptionally high-build, high-gloss finish that dries almost instantly, producing a beautiful, smooth sheen that enhances the natural character of the wood. Unlike many finishes, no pre-sealing is required — although using a cellulose sanding sealer beforehand can elevate the gloss even further.
Favored by woodturners for its ease of use and quick drying time, this polish is ideal for bowls, pens, and other turned objects that require a brilliant, durable finish in just minutes.
๐ง Application Guide
Simple steps to a professional gloss finish
Basic Application Method:
-
Prepare the Surface
Sand your piece thoroughly to a smooth finish, progressing through grits as needed. -
Apply the Polish (lathe off)
With the lathe stopped, apply High Build Friction Polish using a paper towel (recommended for safety). -
Buff & Build (lathe on)
Restart the lathe at 2,000–2,500 RPM. Using the same paper towel, apply moderate pressure along the spinning piece. You’ll feel warmth as the friction cures the polish — this should take about 30–40 seconds. The surface may appear wet but will be dry to the touch almost immediately. -
Repeat as Desired
Apply 3–4 coats for best results, letting each layer set fully before adding the next.
Optional: Using a Sanding Sealer for Extra Gloss
-
For a glass-like finish, apply a cellulose sanding sealer before the polish:
-
Apply with a paper towel or lint-free cloth while the lathe is stopped.
-
Let dry fully.
-
With the lathe running, denib using 0000 steel wool or 420+ grit sandpaper.
-
Follow with friction polish as above.
-
Some turners prefer two sealer coats for maximum gloss.
-
Finish Benefits:
โ Instant-drying high gloss
โ Easy application with heat-activated curing
โ No sealing required — but enhanced with it
โ Excellent for turned wood projects
Pro Tip: For best safety and results, always apply polish and sealer with a paper towel and never use loose cloth near rotating equipment.
